Minotaur - Greek Mythology – The Minotaur was a creature with the head of a bull on the body of a man or, as described by Roman poet Ovid, "part man and part bull". The Minotaur was created by the unnatural union of King Minos' wife Pasiphae and a white bull, sent by Poseidon that was to be sacrificed by Minos in the Gods name. Minos refused to sacrifice it, and so Pasiphae was cursed to fall in love with the bull. The Minotaur was born to her, and once it grew to an adult, Minos had Daedalus and his son Icarus construct a maze/labyrinth in which to keep the Minotaur. It was here that he was eventually slain by the hero Theseus. The term Minotaur derives from the Ancient Greek, a compound of the name (Minos) and the noun "bull", translating as "(the) Bull of Minos". In Crete, the Minotaur was known by its proper name, Asterion, a name shared with Minos' foster-father.
